When I was an over the road truck driver I began to understand how some truck drivers became so overweight and unhealthy. Over the road, all you have to eat is truck stop food which consists of hardy fried chicken, mashed potatoes, pizza, hamburgers, etc. The other ways to access food were difficult and just took too much time e.g. grocery store. After about 6 months on the road, I noticed that I was beginning to look fat and just didn’t like what I saw in the mirror. I began researching ways to eat healthy on the road. One article I found talked about 12 superfoods to incorporate into your daily diet. At first, I was skeptical because the article suggested that you eat all 12 of these foods every day.
- Cherry tomatoes
- Green tea
- Mandarin oranges
- Baby carrots
- Peanut butter
- Greek yogurt
I thought “How in the hell am I supposed to eat all of these healthy, fresh foods each day?” It was going to take some planning. First, it required me to make several stops a week at local grocery stores around the country (thank God for google maps.) This may sound easy but try parking a 70ft Semi-truck in the parking lot of your local grocery store. The scowls I got from the customers were unbelievable.
Plus, I had to make several trips a week because the cab of my truck only fit a small refrigerator.
I knew I had to do something different. Not only was I getting fat, but my annual driver’s physical showed that I had developed high blood pressure and was borderline type 2 diabetic. I just feel lethargic and crappy.
So I went to the grocery store and bought all this stuff and this is how I ate it: For breakfast, I had Oatmeal/blueberries and eggs. Then for lunch, I had a salad with spinach, cherry tomatoes, black beans and baby carrots, tuna and balsamic vinaigrette dressing.
Then throughout the day, I snacked on greek yogurt, walnuts, and peanut butter. I microwaved 3 six ounce cups of green tea in my truck, poured them into empty water bottles and refrigerated them for the next day.
Note: For those of you who say you just don’t have time to eat right, I call bullshit. If you want it bad enough, you will find a way.
Honestly, it took about 4weeks for me to start seeing results. It began with me just having more energy. Then the inches started melting away. I slept better and had an overall sense of wellness.
When my wife saw me for the first time in 4 weeks, she couldn’t believe how much better I looked and so she decided to try it for herself.
I lost 30lbs in three months!
Should you try these superfoods every day for a month or two? Absolutely! I believe this trial was the jumpstart to returning me to my fitness journey, plus what do you have to lose except a few pounds!
